The camera
The Deardorff.
In 1978, Arnie bought his Deardorff 8 × 10 field camera for $200 from George Garian, a retired photographer in Lynn. It had no bellows, so he sent it to L. F. Deardorff in Chicago for new bellows and a front swing.
To collect the camera, Arnie rode to Chicago in an 18-wheeler with his friend Steve Draper. Steve arranged a delivery load to Chicago so Arnie could pick it up.
Garian also sold him 10-inch and 14-inch Kodak Commercial Ektar lenses. Arnie already owned several 4 × 5 cameras and an 8 × 10 studio camera. With the Deardorff repaired and equipped, he was ready to record the world around him.
Many of the photographs he made with this camera found their way into the pages of the Chelsea Record. For Arnie, the appeal of the 8 × 10 format lay in its beauty and clarity: moments frozen in time, preserved in the detail of a large negative.
Arnie used the Deardorff occasionally for newspaper assignments. It was not the camera he carried every day. The McMullen Museum identifies a Nikon F 35 mm as the camera used for most photographs in the exhibition.
