A living archive
Chelsea, Massachusetts: a photographic history.
From 1977–1989, Arnie Jarmak worked for the Chelsea Record as a resident and neighbor, building an archive now numbering more than 20,000 negatives. His photographs hold the city's people, streets, fires, work, politics, businesses, and changing communities.
The Chelsea Record chapter began with an act of trust. Andrew P. Quigley, the Chelsea Record's owner and publisher, hired Arnie without newspaper experience and gave him uncommon freedom to decide which images belonged in the paper.
Chelsea drew Arnie because the lives in its streets—its faces, crowded houses, old cars, labor, endurance, and humor—held both an economic truth and a visual beauty he did not find in affluent communities. Long before the photographs reached a museum, the people in them knew Arnie as a neighbor and as the photographer who kept showing up.
Made on assignment for the newspaper, these photographs now carry the texture of a vanished Chelsea into the present. This first online selection offers a window onto the much larger archive.

A museum chapter
The work entered the museum—and stayed in view.
In 2022, the McMullen Museum of Art presented more than eighty Chelsea photographs. The exhibition grew from Diana Larsen's chance discovery of Arnie's prints inside a shipping container at the 2016 Chelsea Art Walk, after he had begun printing again from negatives kept for decades in one light-tight box. Its catalogue now holds a full biography and an essay on the literature and history within the photographs.
