Arnie recalls encountering a storefront that immediately brought Walker Evans to mind. The hand-painted prices, signs, and dense display turn a long-running Chelsea business into both a street record and a study in American documentary form.

Exhibition note. The McMullen Museum included this image under the title Allen’s Cut Rate, Broadway, 1977. The storefront's hand-painted signs connect the scene to Arnie's recollection of Walker Evans.
